Chapter 4: Rose

I pulled out my phone and dialed Dan and Judy's house, hoping to get information about Sara. It was early in the morning, and I was exhausted, but I didn't care. Dan answered on the third ring.

“Dan,” I said, “I just saw the news. Have you heard from Sara?”

“Sara's in a much better place now, Jon,” he said. I could hear the emotion in his voice and knew something terrible had happened. But I needed information and didn't want to listen to platitudes. I had to know if Sara got out of that church alive or not.

“Don't give me that, Dan,” I said. “Did Sara get out of there alive?”

“Jon, that's all I can tell you right now,” he said.

“What about Judy?” I asked. Indeed, if anyone knew the truth, it would be Sara's mother. “Is she there? Can I talk to her?”

“No, Jon, she's not here,” Dan said. “She got a call from the Proctor and left for the church last night. I haven't seen or heard from her since.”

“Have you tried calling her?” I asked.

“I've tried,” he said. “But it goes straight to voicemail. I've tried calling the police and the fire department, but they said they won't know anything for a while yet.”

“Alright, Dan,” I said. “Call me the minute you hear something, got it?”

“I will,” he said. I ended the call and dialed my parent's house. My mother answered on the first ring.

“Jon, where are you?” she asked. “Have you seen the news?”

“Yeah, Mom,” I said. “I just got into Amarillo and saw the news. Have you guys heard from Sara?”

“No, Jon, we haven't,” she said. “We haven't heard from anyone. You know, we can see the fire from here. It looks awful on the news.”

“I called Dan and he hasn't heard anything either,” I said. “He told me Judy got a call from the church and she left. He hasn't heard back from her.”

“Oh my God,” she said. “I hope she didn't get caught in that fire. The news interviewed a local firefighter who said it was the hottest fire he's ever experienced. Pastor Bill's church started a prayer chain. I'm praying they get out of there alive.”

“Something tells me they didn't,” I said. “Let me know the minute you hear something, alright?”

“I will, Jon,” she said. “Get some sleep now, okay?”

“I will, Mom,” I said. “Goodnight.”

I ended the call and fell back in bed, my mind going 100 miles an hour. I finally fell asleep, my dreams haunted with images of a burning Sara screaming in pain. What have I done? I asked myself.

The next day, I got up, did my morning routine, and checked the news for any updates. When I turned on the television, I saw that a press conference had already started with the local fire chief, the Fire Marshall, the Chief of Police, and state and local officials. The fire chief was at the microphone answering questions from a group of reporters.

“Chief, do you have any idea how the fire got started?” one reporter asked.
